Tangled: A Lizzy Sledge Review
61She's going to have to pull the title of 'Most Awesome Disney Character' out of the old school princess' cold, dead hands.
She'd have one heck of a fight from Snow White, that lady came back from the freaking dead, though I seriously doubt that the Seven Dwarves would have a chance against Pascal.
I generally like things of a dark nature, and Disney has a talent for turning the dark and demented stories of the brothers Grimm into lovely little cartoons with blushing damsels and cute talking animals. Rapunzel being one of the darkest of the stories in my giant volume of collected Grimm's Fairy tales, this magical fantasy did not originally happen in the story. But who cares? Sure Disney has reinvented the fairy tale, but it made kids like me go out and look for the originals and read more.
And this is a friendly and cute way to dip your feet into Disney musicals with your children. The musical numbers don't dominate the plot, and when they do arrive they don't overstay their welcome by lasting a long time. They are clever and well done, no huge dancing routines and singing animals, just a girl, her hair, and a frying pan.
Not to mention her... above average looking partner in crime. Jack Sparrow is my favorite Disney Hero, with Flynn Rider of Tangled taking a close second. It also takes the time to make fun of certain 'Disney Princess' stereotypes while also keeping the old school Disney Princess style. But don't think it's all pumpkin carriage and singing mice, there's none of that cheesy hooplah to take you out of the moment and roll your eyes. It's got a modern sense of humor while tickling that nostalgic love of kitchy, candy coated fairy tales.
My mother has an abrasive sense of humor, which means that she really only responds to abrupt and physical comedy (ie the Minions of Despicable Me,) and she was very reluctant to sit down and watch it with me. By the end of the movie she was yelling at the screen and cheering, admitting that, yes even though it was a musical, Tangled was well worth her time.
So yes, even though I'm not a big fan of musicals, Disney somehow keeps me coming back for more. This movie made me squeal with delight, lasts only 100 minutes, and keep you entertains for every sunny second.
Happy movies!
Never has a happy ending been so well earned.
50th animated film! That's some crazy stuff. As much as some other Disney products and movies annoy me, there are always the few that tug on my heartstrings. The Lion King, the Little Mermaid, the Emperor's New Groove, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Aladdin, and Up are the few that make me feel like a little kid again.
But, while I like those, it is nice to a see a peppy, artistic girl like Rapunzel. She's wandering around barefoot like an adorable pink hippy, with no training in etiquette to muck up her cuteness. If I had to pick a Disney princess to hang out with, I'd pick Rapunzel.
